CCBR Newsflash #1- 20.10.06

Newsflash – 20th October 2006

Dear supporters,
We’re sending this message out today to cover 2 very important issues that require immediate attention. This is giving you the opportunity to get active and with little effort we can make a big impact.

1. Send this letter before the 22nd October

Time is running out for submissions to oppose the Moolarben Coal Project and we all know the devastating effects that coal has on the future of our planet. (for more info. - www.climatechangebr.org – “What’s The Problem With Coal”)
As with the Anvil Hill Mine, this mine is set to produce millions of tonnes of greenhouse gases annually (whether here or overseas) and this mine will be accompanied by a new coal fired power station!! Where is the commitment to clean Energy?

Please copy, sign and send off the letter below.
If you’ve never done this before consider starting now, it really is that simple and very effective

2. Call for Kilowatt Challenge leaflet droppers

If you have time in the next week to deliver some Kilowatt Challenge Fridge flyers to the letterboxes in your street we would love to hear from you.
We have printed 12,000 to deliver throughout the peninsula (Balmain, Rozelle, Birchgrove and Lilyfield) and are hoping to get it done by Sunday the 29th Oct.
We need help with this - an hour of your time would go a long way
Please contact Corinne: csellers@bigpond.net.au or on 9818 6069

And ………
Don’t forget to put the “Walk Against Warming” Rally in your diaries.
Nov 4, 11am Martin Place, Sydney City - www.walkagainstwarming.org

And lastly…
If you like what we’re doing and have friends who you think would be interested in this please feel free to forward it on.
Or…..if you have any feedback or ideas contact us at ccbrmail@aapt.net.au
Or…. if you would like to unsubscribe please let us know at ccbrmail@aapt.net.au

Submission:

I would like to lodge an objection to the Moolarben Coal Project #05_0117.

The Moolarben Coal Project which extends across 3450 hectares and consisting of 3 open cuts occupying a total land area of 1,120 hectares and an underground mine covering an area of 980 hectares is situated in an extremely sensitive area adjacent to the Goulburn River Gorge, between the Goulburn River National Park and Munghorn Gap Nature Reserve in the Upper Hunter Catchment.

It is the third coal mine planned for the Ulan Mudgee area and has a coal-fired power station imbedded in the mine exploration licence. As this proposal involves the production of 12MT of coal annually it has the potential to contribute 32 million tonnes of greenhouse gases annually, and further accelerate global warming. The 12ML (approximate) of diesel used by vehicles and in blasting will emit 382,620T of CO2 annually. Over the life of the mine these greenhouse gas emissions are enormous.

Recognised as one of the greatest threats to Australia by both Federal and NSW governments, the Greenhouse Gas emissions from this project are unacceptable to me.

Further, in the current deepening water crisis, this project threatens the Goulburn River and associated groundwater system, a tributary of the Hunter River and ignores the significance of this riverine corridor as a regionally significant scenic and cultural landscape.

Yours sincerely,
