CCBR Newsflash #48 - 19.4.09
Stop the coal expansion!
Put Free Solar Panels on your roof!
....and rally for an Australia powered by renewable energy!
Dear CCBR Supporters -
This newsflash has a number of things that you can do to act on averting climate change - pick one or all three, or simply forward it on to someone you know who you think would like to take action - the time to act is now - for our future, our kids and our planet...
1. Expansion of Australia's largest Coal Mine!
Our NSW Government is about to consider the approval of the Moolarben coal mine Stage 2. This 'MEGA' mine, will dig up 17 million tonnes of coal per year for the next 25 to 30 years, thus pumping many more millions of tonnes of CO2 in our already saturated atmosphere! This mine is possibly already the single largest exporter of climate changing coal!
The NSW Dept of Planning has NEVER turned down a coal mine application.....
if you think it's time to STOP MINING COAL, send a loud message (see our proforma attached )
to:
- the Dept of Planning, GPO Box 39, Sydney 2001 or
- Fax: 02 92286466 or
- email Nicholas Hall: nicholas.hall@planning.nsw.gov.au
Submissions due by 29th April. Late submissions will be accepted.
More information about the Moolarben mega mine can be found at www.savethedrip.com
also...there is a Poll running in the Mudgee Guardian: http://mudgee.yourguide.com.au/ (half way down on the right side)they are asking: "Do you support the expansion of mining in the Mid-Western Region?" ....NO!
also...SMH article, April 13 - Farmers blockade on the Liverpool Plains taking the challenge to BHP - food and water or the coal industry? http://www.smh.com.au/national/small-farmers-take-fight-to-mighty-miner-20090412-a3zf.html?page=-1
2. Free Solar Panel offer:
NU Energy is offering to provide and install a 1kW Solar System at your house (6 panels), for free!
They guarantee high quality panels and inverters, all with full manufacturers’ warranties.
To receive this offer you must be an owner occupier and be eligible for the Federal Government’s $8000 solar rebate. The offer requires that you sign over your rebate and the system's Renewable Energy Certificates* (RECs) to NuEnergy.
You will have to pay for the installation of a smart meter and connection to the grid through your energy retailer (approx. $450) and NU Energy does ask for a refundable deposit of $2500 that will be returned in full when your $8000 rebate is granted (if you change your mind they reserve the right to keep $500 of this deposit) Call 1300 768 225 (lines close c.o.b. Monday) or go to www.nuenergy.com.au
* they may be open to the extra purchase of the RECs if you were keen to retire them and take them out of circulation! ( approx. value of $900)
.
3. World Environment Day rally..
Put Saturday June 13 in your diary! - we are planning to hit the streets and let our Government know that we support an urgent transition to renewable energy, a transition that ensures rapid growth in our 'green jobs' sectors and implements a just transition for those workers that will be affected. Details TBA - if you would like to letterbox or help with posters etc. please drop us a line by return email (ccbrmail@aapt.net.au)
and....congratulations to all those who sent off a submission to the senate inquiry on the CPRS! Excellent!

CCBR Newsflash #47 - 6.4.09
2 minutes...to kill off 5%!!
Please send a submission to create a better CPRS.
Dear CCBR Supporters (presently over 700 of you),
Please take this opportunity to send two submissions....
As many letters and submissions as possible are needed to go to the Government to highlight the fatal flaws in the scheme:
Submission 1: to the Senate Select Committee on Climate Policy (more info here) your requests for revision of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme Legislation. Send to climate.sen@aph.gov.au open till 8th April, 2009.
Submission 2: calling for comment on the Exposure Draft Legislation for the CPRS that is on public exhibition.(more info here ) Send to emissions.trading@climatechange.gov.au by 14th April.
You can either write your own, cut & copy this text below (and send to the above email links) or go to www.cprs.take-action.org.au and fill out a form to automatically send to both these submissions.
It's not vital, but including or adding comments of your own would show your personal concern about this issue, and would make it look different from the hundreds of others we hope will be sent.
So....go for it!!
*********************************************************************
I Call on the Government to:
• Urgently change Australia’s 2020 emissions reduction target of 5-15% to at least 40–50% by 2020.
• Keep Australia’s 2020 emissions reduction targets out of the CPRS legislation until after the Copenhagen climate deal has been finalised.
• Ensure that individual, community, and all government emissions reduction efforts contribute to additional emissions abatement. Such actions should lower emissions, not lower carbon prices.
• Legislate a ban on all new coal-fired power stations in Australia and a moratorium on all new coal exploration and mining.
• Plan to phase out existing coal-fired power plants over the next ten years. Change the requirements for assistance to coal-fired generators under the CPRS to be conditional upon the 10-year phase-out plan.
• Suspend all subsidies, tax incentives and financial support to the fossil fuel industry, including compensation measures proposed.
• Redirect the $500 million Clean Coal Fund into promoting and advancing renewable energy technology, growth and infrastructure.
• Establish third party rights under the CPRS Act, to ensure that the CPRS remains transparent and accountable.
• Direct all money raised through the CPRS into lower emissions technologies including renewable energy.

For your information CCBR has undersigned the attached Climate Action Group submission.
We have also attached FYI a list of the major fatal flaws of the CPRS as we see them.
And....even if you miss this deadline, it is still worth sending in a submission as an indication of your concern.
And to finish with something positive, here's an excellant article in Today's SMH, Marian Wilkinson is calling it how it really is on the issue of "so called - clean coal"....http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/clean-coal-remains-a-faraway-dream-20090405-9t6o.html?page=-1...there is hope!

CCBR Newsflash #46 - 28.3.09
Earth Hour is tomorrow night! 8.30pm to 9.30pm
Help send a united message to our leaders for real action on climate change at Copenhagen (Dec '09) ....
Dear CCBR Supporters*....we would like to wish you all a very warm (and dark) 'Earth Hour'!
In today's Sydney Morning Herald Ben Cubby writes....
"No one claims Earth Hour will solve climate change, but it is a key part of the public conversation."
Certainly, if you are thinking about participating we would like to suggest that you 'sign up and be counted' (no matter how large or small) at: http://www.earthhourau.org/. By doing this, you will help make 'Earth Hour' the largest climate event in history.
We need to send a message to our world leaders, who will be attending the UN Climate Change Conference being held in Copenhagen in December 2009, that we want a safe climate future for the generations to come.....now is the time to act.
Today members of CCBR went to our Federal MP's (Tanya Plibersek's) office to voice our concern about the major flaws in the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS). For more on what your local folks looked like whilst taking it to the streets, go to: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tanya_plibersek_step-in/ ... our Media Release is also attached FYI.
cheers,
The CCBR team.

Please tick 'yes' to help us in doing an audit on who is (and isn't) receiving this email - this is a once off but it will help us to be more accurate and efficient in the future..... and of course if this email has found it's way to you, without you asking to be on our list, please feel free to unsubscribe by return email.

CCBR Newsflash #45 - 23.3.09
Join us at Friday's "Step In" MP Plibersek's office...
Permit us to make a difference - Switch off the CPRS : Switch on to renewables
Dear CCBR Supporters,
We are inviting you to come along this Friday when we let our MP know that we want the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme to be radically changed from it's present form. The theme is Switch off the CPRS: Switch on Renewables.
Come wearing red – the national colour of climate groups because this is an emergency!
We will gather in the park near Tanya’s office from 11:30 am [corner Crown and Foveaux Streets].
The protest will start outside MP Plibersek’s office [422 Crown Street, Surry Hills] at 12:09 [for December 2009 Copenhagen - crunch time!]. We will have plenty of information about the CPRS [aka Carbon Polluters Rescue Scam] and how little impact it will have on carbon emissions and climate change. Passersby can collect one of our free carbon permits and send a personal message via Ms Plibersek to the Rudd Government. See attached
We are co-ordinating our Step In with other Sydney climate action groups. Here’s the full program:
9:00 am Albanese in Marrickville
10:00 am McKew in Gladesville
11:00 am Garrett in Maroubra
12:09 pm Plibersek in Surry Hills
3:00 pm Labor Party HQ in Sussex Street
We need you there for the sake of the planet.
If you'd like to be there but can't make it on the day ....send us your apologies to give her in person...or.....call Tanya Plibersek’s office on 9357 6366 and tell her what you think of the CPRS and Kevin Rudd’s weak efforts on carbon reduction.
For more information, download the Sydney flyer at http://stepitupaustralia.wordpress.com/about/
It’s in the 'Files' box on the right labelled 'March 27_Sydney.pdf'
And pass this invitation on to your friends.
hoping to see you there,

Some things to consider doing for the planet....
In this email:
1. An e-petition - to increase support for renewable energy
2. A blockade - to stop coal exports (this Saturday)
3. A book - to inform on why Australia is beholdant to the mining companies best interests (out now)
4. A visit to MP Plibersek's office - to convince Tanya Plibersek that we would like the CPRS altered from it's present form. (Friday March 27)
Dear CCBR Supporters,
Please have a look at what's happening locally for action on Climate Change...read on and go for it!
1. An E-petition from Energy Matters
This only takes a few seconds and adds your voice to the call for growing our renewable energy sector. To sign the petition go to: http://www.feedintariff.com.au/ - let's get the government moving on feed-in tariffs!
2. 4th Occupation of the Newcastle Coal Port
This is the fourth one of these events and CCBR is proud to say we have participated in every one! It is a fun day on the beach and water, for people of many backgrounds to come together and stand up for immediate, effective, safe and just solutions to climate change.
When: This Saturday 21st March, 10am - 5pm.
Where: Meet at Horseshoe Beach, Newcastle, NSW (aka "the dog beach" - on the Harbour side of Nobbys Headland).
more info http://www.risingtide.org.au/peoplesblockade
3. Quarterly Essay: The Quarry Vision
This book is an absolute must in understanding how this nation must change if we are to respond appropriately to climate change! It provides an accessible and thoroughly well researched insight into how we've managed to get ourselves into this mess. We suggest you grab a copy of Guy Pearse's Essay, The Quarry Vision, released this week, available at all good book shops now. For more info: http://www.guypearse.com/
4. The next "Step In"- Tanya Plibersek's office.
Next week CCBR is planning to go over to MP Plibersek's office once more. We will be asking her to take the message from her constituents to Kevin Rudd that we do not accept the CPRS in it's current form and want them to go back to the drawing board and and design a scheme that will trully reduce emissions - fast.
This time the snorkels are being left at home and we will be peacefully getting our message across by giving out free permits to any passing polluters - come and join the fun....more details will be sent early next week....
Where: Tanya Plibersek's office, Surry Hills
When: 12.09 Lunchtime - Friday March 27

Today at 1pm in Sydney's CBD - "Switch off the CPRS, Switch on Renewables!"
Instead of the CPRS, we want to see direct investment in renewable energy to get 100% renewables by 2020. Call for a moratorium on coal and sector-by-sector transition plans that are for affected workers and their communities that will create green jobs.
When: Tuesday March 10 at 1pm
Where: Outside the Labor Party Headquarters, 377 Sussex Street Sydney
Wear Red signalling the climate emergency and bring props, signs etc. Come along to find out more about the legislation and how we can effectively oppose the scheme, to achieve real change to address the climate crisis.
Just by being a supporter of CCBR you are making the work that we do more effective, thankyou for your continuing support. If you have friends in the community who you know care about the planet and are keen to take positive action towards finding solutions then tell them about us....
And remember to put March 27 in your diary to join us at Tanya Plibersek's office when we do another "sit-in"!
See http://stepitupaustralia.wordpress.com/ and www.climatesummit.org.au for more information.
cheers,
the CCBR team
PS our next meeting is March 24 - come along!
The Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme exposure legislation is due to be tabled this week...
We are writing to let you know that Climate Change Balmain-Rozelle has joined with other organisations to endorse two different full page ads that will be going to press this week in The Australian.

...as you may have seen on ABC's Four Corners this evening, our grassroots movement needs to maintain the noise coming from our community calling for stronger targets and a CPRS that works.
