CCBR Newsflash #22 - 19.4.08

Newsflash – April 19, 2008

Hello to you all - it's been a while...after a hopeful start with the ratification of Kyoto and much talk of change, it's clear there is still plenty of work for us to do...

5 Minutes of your time to stop runaway climate change
These are some current petitions we recommend you look at:
• Citizens Climate Campaign : www.climatecampaign.info > Take Action Now > "We can't wait for clean coal Mr Rudd"
• Greenpeace : www.stop-fueling-climate-change.org
• GetUp : www.getup.org.au/campaign/AustraliasBiscuitBudget

When the Preliminary Garnaut Review came out last month calling for a 90% reduction by 2050, the Federal Environment Minister Penny Wong was quick to shout it down stating that Garnaut is just one advisor amongst many! At the same time Australian Coal companies are in the process of strategically positioning the industry – grabbing coal reserves and locking governments into a carbon future while undermining proven renewable energy technologies. For example a fourth coalmine project has just been announced for Ulan Wollar region bringing the total mined coal in that area alone to 40 million tonnes / year. When combusted this amount of fossil carbon would produce more than 4 times the total emissions from the NSW transport system (ie 25-30 MT / annum CO2- e).
Once again, it is time to let those politicians know what their constituents want.
Meanwhile, we are working on a new Newsletter format (1 page) that will utilise the website more effectively with up-to-date information. Please let us know if you have any ideas / feedback.
We will also be continuing to help with information on how to switch to Green Power and how to reduce your own footprint. http://www.climatechangebr.org/page4.htm
