CCBR Newsflash #15 - 24.8.07

Newsflash – August 24, 2007

Meeting with Ms Tanya Plibersek.
Federal Member for Sydney - Shadow Minister for Human Services, Housing, Youth and Women.

Dear supporters,
Next Monday - August 27, 2007. CCBR will be meeting with Ms Tanya Plibersek.
During this half hour meeting we will be raising CCBR's concerns regarding CO2 emissions and the Federal Government's role in the growth of our fossil fuel industries.

We anticipate that we will be seeking a response on the following issues and highlighting that we would like to see strong leadership (ie stronger policies than her opponents) in these areas:-
• Labour's policies on emission and renewable energy targets.
• Labour's plans to price carbon.
• Labour's attitude to the expansion of the fossil fuel industry.
• Requesting for Ms Plibersek to support the Climate Protection Bill.
• Requesting for Ms Plibersek to provide us with a clear statement that we can publish in regard to these matters.
Note: We plan to make similar representations to her opponents, but as yet the other candidates have not been finalised.
This is probably due to 'Sydney' being regarded as a safe Labour seat.

From you:

Dear Ms Plibersek,

Thankyou for meeting with CCBR today.
We have a small window of opportunity to act on climate change and I want to know that my elected representative will be taking action to reduce Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.

As a voting constituent, please advise me if you will be supporting any of the following proposals that will help move Australia from laggard to leader on climate change:

1. Do you support the ratification of Kyoto?

2. Will you support a new law to reduce Australia’s greenhouse pollution by at least 30 per cent by 2020, based on 1990 levels?

3. Will you support a legislated renewable energy target of 25 per cent by 2020?

4. Coal – a shift is needed! Do you agree to rule out building any new coal-fired power stations, and responsibly phase out our involvement in the coal industry?

5. Will you support the use of energy efficiency to stabilise Australia’s energy consumption by 2010, and thereafter reduce our electricity use by 1.5 per cent each year to 2020?

6. Will you support a price being placed on carbon (greenhouse pollution), either through a tax or an emissions trading scheme?

7. Will you rule out building a nuclear reactor in your electorate and a nuclear waste dump in Australia?

Please acknowledge receipt of this letter.
I look forward to receiving your prompt response to my questions.

Sincerely,
